Class K permits are the result of a lesislative bill passed in the Calif. State Assembly somtime in the 1980's. The legislation was advisory & can be adopted by any jurisdiction in California (just like newly arrived AB1314 which allows the same for strawbale). It was the result of a political movement among a bunch of rural N. Calif woods dwellers who the Mendocino Co Bld'g Dept was foolish enought to redtag in mass. Thus far I believer only the three above mentioned counties have adopted Class K. It should be there for you to use in Humbolt County. Mendocino's Class K code is simple & very lenient as to what it requires - the one restriction that they placed on cob was and architects of engineers signature on the plans - this is mostly because they don't undersatand cob yet - this will hopefully change as more permitted cob Class K structures are built & the Bld'g Dept gets move familiar with it. What the situation will be in Humbolt remains to be seen - all good fortune in your adventure with that building dept - pleasse let me know how it goes & if I can help you in any way. regards john fordice - other fish architect otherfish at aol.com
