Cob Re: jar test for soilM J Epko duckchow at mail2.greenbuilder.comMon Oct 19 23:28:42 CDT 1998
Hey Uwe and all -
I was at a small week-long gathering of natural building practitioners a
couple weeks ago. Ianto Evans & Linda Smiley (the guts of the Cob Cottage
Company) said that the jar test is interesting, but unreliable (primarily
because of the silt/clay thing that Uwe asked about); it shouldn't even be
a factor in determining the mix. Michael Smith (author of the Cobber's
Companion) concurred, as did Kiko Denzer (author of that little-but-kewl
Earth Ovens book). The sample-making method is the only reliable way of
finding the ideal recipe unique to the constituent components assembled in
a given place.
Cryptic message: Shannon re Kaki - yep.
