Cob bench

I've made the decision to put in a cob bench in our dome.
Does anyone one know if the cob cottage folks used fire bricks for the fire 
box.

My basic design is to build a fire box, circulate the vent down under the bench 
in to a series of channells (to draw more heat from the hot air) and then
up out to structure. I've been debating on using fire bicks or just plan old 
cob sort of like the cob oven design.

I sure wish I had it already build on this cold night.
