Cob: Whose Globalization?Robert Bolman robtb at efn.orgTue May 23 08:18:57 CDT 2000
Hi Everybody, Is this off topic? I don't know. Skip down to the final two paragraphs for my way of relating this post to environmentally innovative building. Global Exchange in San Francisco just sent me a video called "Whose Globalization?" It features their co-founder Kevin Daneher in two half hour segments. The first segment consists of laying out an extremely concise and hard hitting history of The World Bank, International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization. I'm very much into this stuff and I've NEVER heard anyone lay it out the way Kevin does. The second segment consists of an overview of all the things that are being done to change the situation. In spite of the overwhelming problem outlined in the first half of the video there is plenty of cause for hope layed out in the second half. Kevin likens it to a "Global Revolution" - something that has never happened before. If you're interested in receiving a clear, crisp picture of the underlying forces that make the world a socially unjust & environmentally dismal place and then receiving an encouraging vision of things ultimately changing, I encourage you to contact Global Exchange (415) 255-7296 <www.globalexchange.org> . Ask for the video, "Whose Globalization?" Is this off topic? I don't know. One of the most environmentally destructive characteristics of our house construction is the increasing size of our houses. That increasing house size is certainly related to the obscene wealth that we in the U.S. (in particular) enjoy. Our wealth is directly related to poverty and suffering imposed elsewhere in the world (often at gunpoint). This global injustice (and related environmental problem) is what this post is meant to address. If some of you are so offended by the content of this post that you want to attack me, please do it off list. I hate to be the one to start a big flame fest, but I feel that this is extremely important information and that we are doing our souls a disservice by focusing soley on environmental issues and conveniently ignoring the (enitrely related) social issues that are standing right there in front of us. Sorry about the cross posts, too. Rob
