Cob: outdoor altars

Hello cobbers!
  I have not cobbed. I have not been to any workshops. I am, however,
looking into making an outdoor altar and bench for a memorial garden and
thought that cob would be great. The plans for the altar are to have a cob
base with a stone top such as granite. What words of wisdom might you have
for me? What books should I look to for this type of use? Anything you have
would be very helpful. Thanks!
