Well I figured I'd might as well list some examples of what as gone on around my county here in Middle GA. (by the way, these are just little tid bits, no particular rhyme or reason) 1. I got my permit for my cob building about 3 or 4 years ago. It cost $35, only question was how many square feet. Only inspection was checking the distance from the septic tank to the well. 2. Now it cost over $100 to get a permit. Requires a whole series of inspections. 3. This change developed because a large hog farm attempted to relocate from North Carolina, to our county in Middle GA. One of the fellows (rich fellows) on the economic development commission set up by the county purchased the land that was going to be used by the hog farm, prior to it being made public. It was reject not by the county commissioner, but by a district court. The fellow with the conflict of interest was cleared however. 4. The county commissioners then enacted a whole new set of zoning ordinances in response. Funny they didn't object with the Hog farm with some god awful number of hogs was going to be put in the county, but they object if a person doesn't borrow a large amount of money to build a house according to their specification. 5. Since we are one of the poorest counties in Georgia, most folks can not afford houses. The standard living structure here is a trailer. They put in a law which stated that no trailers can be moved if they are over 10 years old. Age not condition was the only criteria 6. most folks take 10 years to pay off the trailer, thus leaving them at the end of 10 years with less options (e.g. can't sell the trailer to someone who wants to move it. Even if it's in great condition. 7. Had a friend that was the first electrical inspector here in Taylor county. He quit, his quote to me was: " too much communism." Good news is I have a very unique house now as I doubt I could build it here at this time if I was just starting. Pat www.gypsyfarm.com
