Jen,
  If you wrap hemp, flax, palm hair, or straw rope of about 1/4 to 3/8"
diameter spiraling around the length of a lath or bamboo strip and then
nail several of these parallel and seperated by about 1/2 to 1" edge to
edge, to the board surface, you have a good solid keying surface for
earthen or lime or earth & lime mortars.
