Fw: Cob: Cold Sink [Darel]Bill&Julie wbates at mn.rr.comThu Dec 19 08:52:29 CST 2002
This is just to add to the thought process,,, Years ago I read about the concept of the "cold sink",, I don't remember what they called it. But the article was in the Alaskan Magazine. It was a freezer for the out back in the area of the PERMAFROST... First you built a building 6x6x6 with a highly insulated floor. Through the trap door in the floor you dug down 8 to 12 feet. And you enlarged a room and built shelves.. This is done in the frozen ground, and that far north you would have a freezer year around,,, This concept would work to various degrees anywhere.. imho: To do this much work would be therapy,, and if you didn't absolutely have to,, would mean that you needed therapy,,, ~¿~ Just kinding ~¿~ bill ----- Original Message ----- From: Kim West To: Cob List Sent: Wednesday, December 18, 2002 2:12 PM Subject: Re: Cob: Cold Sink [Darel] Hi Darel. My use of "deep cold sink" may have been a bad choice of words. I just didn't know what to call it. What I was referring to was a relatively small hole dug in the ground, say maybe 4'X4' to use to help keep food. It seems that, if you have made an adequate drainage system around your house, and under your foundation, you could do it with little or no moisture problems. If you have, or can get, an old fridge, you could use the door of it to close it if it isn't too big. I didn't want to go the way of having an entire cellar because of the possible problems with water, although the place you spoke of did sound like a good idea. I was just wondering if anyone had tried to make one, and if so, how well did it work.
