One way to insure more support for the glass is to make a frame. Pretty
much any salvaged lumber with a straight span equal or greater to the
dimensions of the window could be used. Basically each side would be cut to
45 degree angles (unless an odd shaped piece of glass) and then datoed (a
special blade for a saw) or routed to create a channel for each piece of
glass (1,2,3,etc). This would provide support and also prevent dirt from
being a problem (assuming you clean the panes before the last side was
connected). This is probably more labor intensive but considering the
problems off breakage or dirt in double panes it may be worth it.
