Fellow natural builders, We are having a couple of workshops next month and would like you to join us at Lake Elsinore for a super little workshop designing a Hobbit House for a future workshop and doing a straw bale pool patio cover. The patio cover will not only be straw bale, but also light clay and bamboo and will be finished with earthen plaster. Pine Manor has multiple buildings/projects inspired by many natural building disciplines, set amongst a pine forest in Southern California. Here are the particulars: ---------------------------- Design Workshop - Friday evening, 6 June 2003 Straw Bale Pool Patio Cover Workshop - 7/8 June 2003. Design workshop - Friday Evening - 6 June 2003 Join with us to design a Hobbit House made of earth bags and cob. Materials: Earth bags from Cal Earth Roof: Living roof Projected use: Short-term accommodations for two people overlooking an enchanted glen. The structure will be built in a September 2003 workshop. "A favorite space you loved as a child? A place that brought peace and contentment or joy? Bring that into the design of a Hobbit House. What would that sacred space look like? What elements would it include? What would be important to you? What essential qualities would you want to capture? Is it a playful place? A safe harbor?" - Gail Warner Join with us in a guided tour of your imagination to come up with another magical space at Pine Manor. Use modeling clay/balsawood and graph paper to come up with ideas incorporating the above. Time: 5:00 - 6:30 pm Arrival/registration/snacks/settle into rooms 6:30 - 9:00 pm Experiential design time Facilitators: Gail Warner, Pine Manor and Michael Leach, artist and natural builder Straw Bale Pool Patio Cover Workshop - 7/8 June 2003 Join us at Pine Manor (http://www.pinemanor.com/) to construct a straw bale pool patio cover using natural building techniques and materials. An existing pool side straw bale wall will be rounded on both ends using either straw bale or light clay construction. A curved straw bale bench will be constructed and covered with a natural earthen plaster. Niches or windows may be added to the back wall. The cover will be made of large bamboo recently harvested and saved from a landfill. Come and learn how to work with these natural materials to make a very unique and beautiful pool patio cover. Lots of hands on experience. :-) Enjoy the surroundings at Pine Manor (just out of Lake Elsinore, CA on the Ortega Highway off the I-15) and experience all the on site natural structures to include: A cob cottage with fireplace and living roof, a second cob cottage (Cob, Jr.) with round wood framing and an antique pine ceiling, a round straw bale cottage with reciprocal roof and magnificent painted radiant heated floor, and a beautiful straw bale entrance wall/gate plus others. Time: 9:00 am Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon around 4 pm or so Workshop Leader: Preston Bell Preston is one of our visiting builders and worked on the Round Straw Bale house, the ceiling in Cob Jr, and other straw bale projects.
