- paper bales are possibly more insulative than with straw but otherwise very similar and i like the direct use of newspaper instead of having to re-process (more embodied energy etc...) ++++++++++++ HI- Eos- Bales have been used by a CO builder, and featured in Natural Home magazine a year ago...very heavy bales of carboard/paper scrap were plastered over, lots of other recycling too in the house. But they used a cement plaster I think. Paper Clay seems like a real meeting oc cob and papercrete...and lives in the art world at the moment. I think this is an excellent place to start for people not ready to commit to building a shed or house yet. Large size paper-clay sculptures, art, wall partitions etc are possible, and totally natural materials use too. on the ome images: I am curious if the pine branch dome is planned as a temporary dwelling? Has Phil done these before? The technique of mud daubing brushes and branches for a shelter is a very ancient technique practiced in England. 1940's Architect Hugh Braun talked about these dwellings as tents of living branches plastered with river mud/clay, and over time more branches are added as the inner ones shrank and dried up/dropped needles, etc. he said that the "whole mass congealed" into a thick wall and was draft free over time. It is essentially a shortcut wattle and daub, with the wattle unstripped of greenery. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts in a rainy area...where is this structure?? OR or WA? Was it difficult to keep the crete mix on the greenery? did people work from the inside and outside at the same time? inquiring forest dwellers wanna know. PS: I have only spoken to Phil on the phone, not met up with him yet.
