 Neither does sheetrock ceilings
require this.   It has been done without for thousands
of years....   

I wasn't aware sheetrock as been around that long :-)

My considered opinion is no, you do not need a vapor
barrier between the bamboo ceiling covering and the
insulation above it.   Neither does sheetrock ceilings
require this.   It has been done without for thousands
of years....   

If you don't use the corn based think of using a clay
slurry covered straw or wood chip insulation.
