[Cob] roman cementMarlin lightearth at onebox.comSat Jun 5 17:15:33 PDT 2004
Yea, we used Fired Clay (Grog) from a clay supplier here in Wisconsin and it seemed to work great,,,,,,Volcanic Ash is only available in certain areas but plenty of folks have built Roman cement without it -- - - heard burnt clay is a common additive from everything I've read. Woood ash, I don't believe, has the parts that are neccessary for the Lime to react with it, if it does it might be a weak pozzolan.

I doubt that wood ash would work as a viable substitute (though I can't say
definitively that it wouldn't) However, here in the UK (as well as other
non-volcanic Roman territories I'm sure) they substituted brick dust/fired
clay for volcanic ash.

i have been a lurker for some time now and have found the list to be
informative, helpful, and at times entertaining(wont mention the who) i would
like to ask if hardwood ash (almost exclusively red oak) could be used
inplace of volcanic ash to make a mortar. cobbing in pa chris
