Cobbing Work Party – Lyle, WA July 21, 2007 - 10:00-3:00 Join Portia Masterson at her new home, Cloud Hands, above Lyle, WA for a day of cobbing. We will build up courses of cob on the concrete rubble trench foundation ready to support the first course of straw bales. This will include digging the clay, stomping cob, and applying slip and cob to the broken concrete that is already mortared into place. This is the north wall of her workshop. The south wall is cob and now more than three feet high. Portia will demonstrate each step so no experience is needed. Snacks will be provided at 10:00 and 3:00 and lunch at 12:30. Meet interesting people and learn new skills in a beautiful setting. We will be working in full sun so bring: A broad brimmed hat and sunscreen A shirt to wet in the water barrel for cooling Rubber gloves – dish washing or gardening Rubber boots – or you can stomp cob bare footed A water bottle Directions to the site: Come to Lyle on Hwy 14. Turn up the hill just west of the bridge over the Klickitat River on Old Hwy 8. The sign says Appleton. Two miles up from Hwy 14 turn to the right on Canyon Road. Again the sign will indicate Appleton. Seven miles up Canyon Road is Johnson Road going off to the right. It is hidden behind the crest of a small hill but you will see a sign at the top of the hill on the right indicating a road entering from the right. The street sign says Johnson Road. Turn right and go 1.3 miles. You’ll pass a “Highland Acres” sign written in rope on a large tree cross-section. The road turns sharply downhill to the left and at the bottom of this “S” turn is a driveway going due east, straight out of the second curve. This is the entry to Cloud Hands. There will be a sign directing you along this private drive to the Cobbing Work Party. Follow the road about 700 feet to the work site and parking. Call if you have questions – 720-233-8840. My phone signal is weak so you will need to leave a message and I’ll call you back soon. I look forward to working with you. _________________________________________________________________ PC Magazine’s 2007 editors’ choice for best web mail—award-winning Windows Live Hotmail. http://imagine-windowslive.com/hotmail/?locale=en-us&ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HMWL_mini_pcmag_0707
