Curious myself, I did a google search.

Looks like it's something used by potters in glazing material.

Hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate mineral.  Suspension 
agent/plasticizer similar to bentonite and macaloid. Up to 2% of dry 
materials weight as plasticizer in high-kaolin claybodies, ...

it appears there are at least two types, veegum C and veegum T.  I 
didn't dig deep enough to find the difference between them.

That's enough off-track research for me tonight, but feel free to do 
some of your own.
