[Cob] Question about the dimensions of Rocket stoves

I have the model of the Rocket stove built in the garden so before I begin on the one in the Lounge I want to check a couple of things.

Can someone who has built a stove tell me the following. I am qouting from Ianto's book

1. "D is the distance from the feed tube to the heat riser...optimum proportion is about half the height of the heat riser"

Here does "heat riser" mean a,b,c,or d and does "burn tunnel" mean e,f,g,or h?

2. How important is the dug out ash pit at the bottom of the feed tube? Would an ash pit where the pipe exits from the barrel be sufficient?

In anticipation,

Su Hagan

With Thanks.

Ordinary tin doesn't burnish well, or if it does it rusts right away, and this isn't a particularly pretty or durable surface. That's the reason for carbon black, or wood stove finishes sold for this purpose. If you want this pretty and shiny, consider getting containers made out of stainless steel, or a stainless steel cover instead.

> Hi Sue, I have had good success using an angle grinder with a wire brush cup. I like the ones with the twisted wire, like ropes, better than the softer ones similar to a hand wire brush. Do make sure you match the RPM rating of the wire brush cup to that of the grinder. Also since little wires fly off as you are doing this leave no skin unprotected. The end result is a lovely satin finish.
