I agree, energy is where it all devolves.  Fortunately, we live in a mild
enough climate (580 cooling degree days and 4770 heating degree days) that
we can probably meet all our cooling and heating needs by careful siting,
moveable shading, permanent shading, planting, control of window placement
and size, air lock entry, attention to breezes and prevailing wind, north
sheltering, lots of thermal mass centrally located, thermal mass floors, a
tight house, the insulation of bales, ceiling & perimeter insulation, and
plenty of appropriate solar collection, be it stored in the attic +/or
floors.  I DO like your willingness to brainstorm, though!  And I agree that
Laren is working in the right direction.
