Kristen,
	It would be good to at least have a rubble trench under the addition  
to keep settling to a minimum. Maybe you could design a foundation of  
arches to run along beside the existing building. That way you could  
keep from digging so much beside the loose rocks. Or maybe do some  
pointing to the existing foundation before you start with your  
addition. Just some ideas. I'm no expert.
