What is necessary is to either insulate the overhang or construct it as a labyrinth where there will be air circulation.  You can use vertical, home-made solar panels to power the warm air to it, to keep from using your warm, inside air.
 
On wood-sheathed roofs in the Northeast U.S.A., they use a black rubber material with a sticky backing that will soak up heat and let the ice dam melt quicker.
