[Cob] Are roof overhangs absolutely necessary?

Old Devonshire saying - the original home of cob - "Give 'un a gud 
hat an' a gud pair o' boots"    if you want cob buildings to last  ie 
waterproof the bottom of the wall at the ground by putting it on 
stone or other impermeable base, and a good overhang at the top.
