alternative to concrete foundation is the rubble trench. Look it up! it is
very simple... a trench dug to frost line and slopping out to sunlight away
from the building. drainage pipe at the bottom, line it, and fill it with
drainrock. tamp it down to ground level or let it settle a year, and build
your foundation on top of that. simplest, cheapest. if you have a deep
frostline (like me ) you will be diggin hard. and if you're using hand
tools ( like me) you will get tired! but if you don't do it wrong, it'll
only ever have to be done once.
