Janet,

If it's any help, we used a paint-on waterproofing layer called Xypex.
Something I just thought of while thinking over the whole thing of
separating cob from its concrete foundation might be to put in a continuous
row of stones in the centre of the cement, and fit flashing over the top
with gentle persuasion from a hammer where necessary. I'm not even sure
anything would be needed if the cob was free to breathe on both sides of the
wall. Any moisture that wicked up through the cement would just dissipate
through the cob when it got there, I think.

Jill,
Will you please let me know if you have tried a one way vapor barrier
between the cob and concrete?
