Hi Shawn & any interested Cobbers,
Update,
Looks now like the cobbing will start Friday or Saturday & run thru the weekend.
Hope you can make it.

The samples will be small wall panels 2’ x 2’ x 13” thick and thumbed into open top plywood molds ( they need to be uniform thickness with smooth sides for the test (ASTM C1363). Based on prior experience with the soil we are using, the mix will be 1:1 soil:sand. This mix gave the max compressive strength in prior tests and this is what is preferred structurally. Cob is a very poor insulator and I’m speculating that varying the sand content to improve the U / R values will have minimal effect. Plus, the tests are very expensive (appx $4000 per test) & we can only afford one. Let me know if you can come on one of those days.

True, the stomping dance can be a source of joy, but when time & quantity is an issue, a power mixer is faster and uses less personal energy ( a personal geriatric decision ).

>> This Cob Thermal Test is to establish an accurate U value for cob. U value can be numerically converted to the R value as R = 1/U. Cob’s R value needs to be established to demonstrate energy compliance required for building permits once cob is accepted into the building codes. This is important work towards the future of making cob building permits possible.
