Cob COVER MY CLAY OR NOT??? (fwd)

I have 200 yards of a pretty gray and sticky clay for my hopeful future 
cob home.  I have covered it in fears of the rains washing it away.  It 
seems that if it drys out--- then get wet, it turns to mush and seems to 
be shinking away. It now looks to be about 2/3rds the size.  Should I 
cover my clay of not???
