Cob Construction and Healing
Workshop August 5-18, 2000
Killaloe , Ontario
Cost: $880 US*
Learn how to build with cob and strawbale while helping to create a medical
clinic in the rolling hills of the Canadian Shield near Algonquin Park,
Ontario, a few hours west of Ottawa. This workshop offers a chance to meet
some wonderful folks while helping to create a working space for practicing
fun, creative and compassionate health care. Linda Smiley and Ianto Evans of
the Cob Cottage Company will be teaming up with a group from the Gesundheit!
Institute, founded by Patch Adams (of movie fame). This project will be the
next step toward building Gesundheit's fantasy hospital which will be so
delightful and such fun to be at that staff are thrilled to live and work
there and patients wish they could stay longer.
At Cob Cottage, we are convinced that the buildings we live and work in
profoundly affect our emotional, spiritual and physical well-being. In all
of our buildings, we explore how a sense of belonging creates health.
Discussions will be held on the effects of natural materials, the
geometries of space, surface textures and the love and care with which
builders construct buildings, and the importance of humor and community in
healing. In two weeks, we expect to do substantial work on the walls, floor,
and roof structure of a cob, strawbale and natural roundwood building.
It's also possible to take the course in one-week segments. The first week,
basics of cob, has a waiting list. In the second week, we will do more work
on the building, including the roof, a spiral staircase, a rocket stove and
wood-fired heated floor, and get into the healing aspects of this work. The
one-week cost is $540 US.*
