Mike Oehler in his book $50 & UP does recommend charring the ends in
fire, and I saw this done at the Nat. Builders retreat in OR 2 yrs ago
while putting Madrone poles into the ground for fencing. the pole ends
are burned in an open fire until a crazing develops, which is not too
deep.
Mike & otheres like Rob Roy used to recommend Penta 5 a toxic chemical
preservative, but no longer do. Charring, thentarring, and plastic bags
seems to all be popular ways.
hope this helps
