WJ- the "cruck " system is well known and documented,,,giant bent trees
were cut in half, and the curved beams pegged in the center to form a
cruck .  in one great long house 144 crucks were used...talk about
deforesting...the King gave a pair of twin crucks to his nobles as a
gift of  their loyalty, this is where the  shape of the Chevron (French)
(upside down V) came from..  a military symbol still used today.
