Cob: stain for concrete floors

Hi everyone

I saw on a tv program that you can stain your concrete floor to prevent
upscale costs of conventional flooring.  Has anyone heard of this method?
 Does anyone know of what kind of stain to use??

What I saw on the program was that after the cement is poured and set,
a floor sander/polisher is  used to ,make it smooth, a stain is applied
in different layers, making it almost a marbled effect and then 3-4 coats
 of varathane is applied
