How about this:

Adequate southern glazing, walls built out of strawbales for you insulation requirements - and a well insulated roof of course, thick earthen floor and interior cob walls for your thermal mass. maybe even sink the north side of the house into the ground and a thermo-solar radiant floor heating system?
