Cob: how to clean oil barrels?

another question folks,

My local mechanic has several metal drums he'll give me.  look like they'd 
be great for soaking lime.

question:  how do i get rid of the oil that is in the drums?
mechanic said, "oh just rinse them with gasoline".........but what would i 
do with that?????

any ideas?
