There is a system on the market(Can't recall the name right now.)that has
the wire in a somewhat more attractive flat conduit.Comes with corners for
changing directions,a "finished" look outlet box and in different
colors.This stuff is all surface mounted,so repairs are easy!This should
work and be somewhat more attractive!

Sure it's legal.

But the description was of exposed conduit on top of drywall.  UUUGGGLLLYYY.
