Cob: enviroshake/ rain collection, Alaska log cabinAmanda Peck ap615 at hotmail.comTue Apr 22 20:11:28 CDT 2003
The tirecrafting guys have been collecting information like that for a good long time, say that (in FAQ # 4) they will send you what they've got, given a SASE. I'd hate to make some sort of weird cistern out of used tires, but I expect that the enviroshakes are not much worse than any other kind of roofing material. I asked a manufacturer of painted metal roofing once about this, got back an answer on the order of, "don't do it. Our manufacturing process is totally benign, but who knows what the manufacturers of the metal have put on their products." Sounded like nonsense to me, given that getting paint to stick generally requires clean (primed) metal. The log cabin guy I've hired and I have a handful of logs up for the vertical log room at the end of the pole barn, by the way. Finally found out where to get hydrated lime--TSC, at least I hope so, they've been out. Here's where to start looking for information about recycled tires. http://www.tirecrafting.com/04FAQ/04faq.htm Jenny wrote: I went to a 'country home show' last weekend and one booth had 'enviroshake' on display which is made from recycled tires mixed with hemp to look like cedar shakes. They looked quite natural and quite nice close up. They apparently cost about the same as cedar shakes but they have a 50 year guarantee and don't start to break down for about 100 years. Just wondering if anyone could predict what the off-gassing situation may be on to rain water if one was collecting. I asked the rep and he looked like no one had ever asked him that before but thinking on his feet said it'd be fine after the first few good rains. _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963
