Fellow Natural Builders,

Come join us at Pine Manor (see http://www.pinemanor.com/ and go through the natural building door) for a neat workshop.

Preston of the Mojave

-------------------------------------------------------

Build a Hobbit House. Sept 6 and 7th
made with Straw Bales, Earth bags & Cob.

Participate in the creative learning process of natural building. We will be building a Hobbit

House on the back of an existing straw bale wall. We will incorporate straw bale, earthen bags

and Cob in the design of this magical abode. This is a fun and energizing experience. You will

come away with more understanding of how to work with these materials as well as an understanding

of projects that promote sustainable living and the incorporation of recycled materials.

Facilitators: Preston Bell and Michael Leach

- Preston has led several workshops working with Bob Bolles of Sustainable Solutions as well as

natural earthen plaster and straw bale construction workshops in New Mexico. Preston is an

enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher. Preston was responsible for much of the creation of the

reciprocal roof in the Round House at Pine Manor as well as many other contributions to our

collection of buildings and structures.

- Michael is a builder and residential artist will be assisting in this workshop. Michael's

creativity, knowledge of design and his earth building experience bring an added dimension to the

workshop.

Enjoy Pine Manor~
Part of the fun of this workshop is being able to see first hand the existing work
- Cob, Sr. ~ a massage studio with a living roof and Rumford-type fireplace·

- Cob, Jr. ~ a cozy massage/meditation space with hand stripped round wood beams and design

elements as well as a ceiling of recycled old wood from the stables.

- Round House ~ a 16' round building made with straw bales and finished with earthen plaster. It

has an amazing reciprocal roof made with recycled beams and a radiant heat earthen floor that is

a piece of art.

- Cob oven and bench ~ built by visiting builders from Cob Works in Canada.

Fee: $120 for two days - workshop, food and lodging
$45 for one day- lunch included

Work exchange: (MUST register by August 28th). You can cut the fee in half by volunteering the

Saturday before the workshop (August 31st) or the Friday before the workshop (Sept 5th)
