The rock dust I'm refering to is a by-product of crushing large rock into gravel. It is dark grey in color (at least it is here) and is anywhere from a fine powder to a course sand in size.

What are you referring to as rock dust? We used two different kinds of
"sand" in our cob. The first looked like sand but had sharp little pieces of
crushed rock in it. It cut our feet so badly that I had to wrap them in duct
tape by the third or fourth day of stomping cob else give up and admit
defeat. The second load we got was from the dirt hauler's land and it was
all natural--just the way it came from the earth. Never had a prob with it
and it seems to have done quite well. Will know for sure once the house is
finished next year.

Kim

----- Original Message -----
From: "phil" <phawn1 at excite.com>
To: <coblist at deatech.com>
Sent: Monday, November 10, 2003 11:14 AM
Subject: RE: [Cob] hybrid systems(cobwood)

>
> I spoke with Rob Roy in July and had a chance to question him on cobwood.
He said that he didn't really have enough experience with cob to be able to
comment too much on it. The price difference alone
between rock dust ($9.50 a ton) and sand ($50.00 a ton) make rock dust the
obvious choice as an aggregate in cob.
>
> Phil Hawn
> President
> The North Carolina Natural Building Coalition
> http://naturalbuilder.org
>
>
> --- On Sat 11/08, jenny walker < jwalker at magma.ca > wrote:
> From: jenny walker [mailto: jwalker at magma.ca]
> To: coblist at deatech.com
> Date: Sat, 08 Nov 2003 10:11:04 -0500
> Subject: [Cob] hybrid systems
>
> Hello there, another hybrid system Jilly and others that could be done
is
cordwood.
