I'm waiting for tthe new Evans book too.

In the meantime, though, you might take a look at Ken Kern's book fireplaces 
and stoves.  He has a pretty elaborate verson of the barrel on 
barrel--requires rather a lot of welding--that can be cobbed over, still has 
an outside air intake, preheater for the air, the upper barrel can be used 
for an oven, a smoker, or bypassed to send heat out quickly so it won't be 
too awful in the summer.

www.dirtcheapbuilder.com publishes a reprint of the book, and has the 
original for slightly more..
