Charmaine,  The way you described cobbing over the wood burning stove 
reminded me of a plan for a masonry stove/ kuchelhofen  (sp?)  Have you 
thought about cobbing in a circulating chimney while you were at it to see 
if it would work?  Anyway, since you can buy a firebox to build your own 
masonry stove, I don't see why it wouldn't work.
