Interesting.  That really might be a chimney that was used as a chimney 
after the lid was put over the fire.

The Mexican Indians that I spent a summer with back in l970 would build on 
another house as the family grew.  But the oldest house was also the kitchen 
with an open fire.  My clothes smelled like the cook-fire's smoke after I 
got back--not stuff I wore much, so when I opened that box I was taken back 
to Mexico.
