I've always wondered how the connection is made at the
base of the

ground,
but what do they do? anyone know?

Well the sensible (or Japanese) thing to do is to
place a rock on the ground and the post on top of
that. Many of the very old Japanese houses are post
and beam (that does in fact exclude the storage sheds
that are built out of something an awful lot like cob)
the posts are all placed on stones that are choosen
for their shape to hold the wood. I've seen a few
that look like they were chiseled out a bit to hold
the post. But many of the farmhouses seem to have a
half buried rock (to stabilize it) and a post just
plopped on top. I know I have pictures somewhere but
am too busy building to find them (my apologies) If
you bother me sometime after snow flies I might dig
them out and send them to whoever asks.
Best,
Copper
