I would like to recommend http://www.astm.org/DIGITAL_LIBRARY/comp_search.htm?query=earth&collection=fulltext&resStart=0&resLength=610&showRes=true There are a great deal of scientific papers dealing with standard practices about earth in bouldings and lots more.
 
Building officials might like to see a few of these before giving the 'ok'.
