Cob Introduction, question.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I first became aware of cob through the recent article in the Mother Earth
News magazine. I am now considering a summer cottage for my family in north
eastern Indiana out of this material, and would appreciate any comments
about the use of cob in this region.

One of the first things that struck me when reading the cob article was my
memory of a series of odd "dun" towers in Scotland that had long mystified
archaeologists, as they seemed to be made of impossibly large stones. More
recent research has revealed that in fact they were clay structures which
had been filled with wood and brush, and covered with more of the same,
then "fired" like a clay pot. The entire structure was originally a single
ceramic unit, and it only looked like rok because of cracks over the many
centuries (these were 10th c. IIRC. Does anyone have any information or
speculation about the recreation of such a stucture now?

Sincerely,

Brian Hathaway
