Cob: Insulation for cobThe Van Wey Family vanwey6 at bitterroot.netThu Jul 8 09:00:03 CDT 1999
Hey, I apologize as this may have been covered before ( please allow me the newcomer to the list allowance!), but has anyone ever though about or tried to add styrofoam balls or peanuts to the cob mixture. It seems the "voids" it would create would cause a little better insulative value for the wall overall. And it doesn't seem that you would lose that much in strength. Maybe you could even add chicken wire or stucco lath to the cob walls as you are laying them up to compensate for any loss of strength. I am interested in building one of these things possible here in SW Montana, but the insulation value is making me question it. Did I hear right that a cob wall only has about an R-0.25/inch?!? Thanks, Shane Van Wey
