Thanks so much for the ideas of charring (or cahrring and tarring) and the
parrafin wax technique. Either would be workable although I would likely choose
the least expensive option. I will have to cost out the wax, and compare that to
the cost of some kind of tar.

Is there a tar that is relatively non-toxic or are they all petroleum based? I
would certainly have to consider the toxicity.

I do believe that the paper written about the early Ukrainian settlers does
indeed mention charring. That is obviously something I can do easily!
