Plaster lath is also known as "blood lath" due to its nasty qualities of cutting unprotected flesh...best to use leather gloves when cutting and nailing it up. And it does cost $5-6 per 4'x8' sheet. Chicken wire would probably work too, just need to staple it up with heavy staples to hold to the wall. Our wall was sheathed with 1x6 T&G. I used the metal lath because in our commercial application (a busy restaurant) I didn't want to experiment with something that might come off.
