Living in a $500 dollar house is not for everyone. First you have to have a
small house with a small roof and second you must count on a lot of recycled
material coming your way.
As for a toilet system I highly recommend "The Humannure Handbook" by
Joseph Jenkins. I hate his writing style, but his system is the best I have
seen, though somewhat labor intensive. It requires three drywall buckets, two
compost bins, a toilet seat and means to mount the seat over a drywall bucket
and a supply of sawdust.
The bins should large enough to hold 1 years worth of waste material.
When the first bin is full start on the second bin. When the second bin is
full the first bin is one year old and should be ready to empty into the
garden. If you are nervous about the material in the first bin put it around
fruit trees but if your compost in heats up as it should there will be no
health problem. (The book recommends buying a 3 ft. thermometer to check and
record the temperature at various portions of the pile)
As I say this life style is not for everyone.
