I personally saw such a tub arrangement (about 1974) in one of the old NY
apartments built before plumbing on Delancy Street. I believe the building
was built right around 1865.  The guy had a free standing sink next to the
tub in the kitchen area.  He also had a bar he placed against the front door
to keep the druggies from kicking it down when he was sleeping.  The
neighborhood did have a good bagel shoppe.  Most of those old building have
been razed to allow new high rises that were exempt from the rent freeze
that was in effect for the existing apartments.  TS
