There has been a very active discussion about thermal mass,
insulation properties & passive solar. I would sum up.

IMHO - for very cold sub-arctic winters, cob is not appropriate. I'd use
wood not mud.
For regions from arctic to temperate and for cold north-facing walls -
there's straw bale, cob & cordwood
For regions from temperate to tropical - simple cob is ideal.
For hot deserts, tents work best with a nomadic lifestyle.

Hidare All...
The mental gymnastics proves that people are willing to research,
and that is good. BUT
People have, and do live in tents, all over the world. But that doesn't
mean it is easy,,, or fun.
I think you will find that where COB comes into its own, is where
the average of the day and night temperatures is very close to the
target temperature for the inside...
If you can find, or do live in a zone like that, you will need no extra
heating or cooling....
The thermal mass of adobe and COB works the same way to average
out the extreems... When the average outside temperature is 10°F,
as in much of Minnesota, Then you will have to add heat from another
source.( I have seen 2 weeks of -35°F for the highs, 1977, Walker, MN )

How thick would the COB walls have to be to store enough enegy
for Northern Minnesota without adding extra heat,,,,
You may as well live underground...
Which is another chapter to another book...
