[Cob] bam photoYun Que yunk88 at hotmail.comThu Feb 12 09:51:24 CST 2004
Cat here, I lived in CA during the quake that took out the high way near San Francisco. I was 45 min away. The land rolled like ocean waves the walls of the houses rippled like jello. Most folks went out to areas where nothing could fall on them and waited it out. So maybe lots of doors out of the house with several areas where nothing can fall on you! Timber frame roof systems are more flexible. In this area the barns built this way are difficult to demolish even with heavy equipment. When left to themselves they sag and slowly lower themselves to the ground sometimes with their joints and pegs still in place. The pictures convince me that earth building certainly holds up well under stress considering the age of the construction!! The highway that collapsed was steel reinforced concrete twisted like spaghetti. For me I'll put my faith in little strands of straw and clay. Read a book on pottery that explained the structure of clay and why it needs to be pounded to work well. Clay is like little platelets that as they are moved with water slide into and interlocked system. The water acts as the lubricant, and the movement squeezes the water out locking the plates into one an other. I didn't explain it as well as the book but I hope you get the picture for the good of all C. >From: "Mary Hooper" >To: "Elizabeth" ,"coblist" >Subject: Re: [Cob] bam photo >Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 02:45:36 -0500 > >Elizabeth wrote: > > From what I have read, most damage was to buildings described as >"unreinforced adobe brick", which I know is a very different building >method.
