[Cob] about heating

Yup, people often forget ventilation, whether underground or
superinsulated. An easy out is earth tubes. Running air pipes just
underground where the earth temperature is warmer (or cooler, depending on
the season) and sucking that air into the house with an exit on the other
end of the house. Or maybe using a fan exhaust on the opposite side of the
house which would suck air in through the earth tubes coming in the other
side. Not a complete heating or cooling solution, but sure beats opening
windows to the heat or cold. Also a good way to feed warmer air to a wood
stove than letting in cold air from above ground.

What book was that? Sounds like a Russian stove or Finnish stove or
whatever they call them, an outside heater for the house. I'm told they
often use something like that in the far Northeast. The principle is using
thermal mass to hold heat longer, in that case the rocks around the barrel.
Same principle as indoor masonry heaters, more efficient than regular
fireplaces in absorbing and releasing heat longer.
