If we can get the stuff from the La Brea tar pits it's fine, at least if we
live in SOUTHERN California?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

(does it help that it's mixed with clay?)

Tony Wrench's book is pretty interesting on the subject of low impact,
locally available, etc.

Louise, in answer to Quinn:
You echo my feelings on the matter. I'm hoping that I can use natural
materials that are locally obtained in order to use renewable resources,
avoid shipping costs and use 'reclaimed' materials in order to keep 'junk'
out of the landfills. On the other hand, I'm beginning to realize just how
difficult that ideal might be. I'm hoping that at least any high energy
materials that end up in my home will be something reclaimed from somewhere
else, and I'll be saving energy one way or another.

AE seems counter to that goal. Any thoughts on the matter?
