Hi folks, this is a message from Phil Mirkin who will be building and
teaching papercrete-fiberadobe here in N. CA.
He is building for a local woman architect who learned about papercrete
from me back in Nov. on the local KMUD radio show I do.

I will be meeting Phil tomorrow, 7-14, and hope to assist/teach on the
process with lime and plaster info later this summer.

Passing on this notice is NOT a solicitation for Phillip, but a
chance to come see a real project.. the FIRST one in this entire
area!!
[ if anyone is offended, sorry I get lots of requests for "what is
happening locally?"..so this fits the bill for the curious]

If you are in this N CAL area a FREE seminar will be held on July 21,
6:00 pm at the Humboldt State Campus Ctr App Tech house.

New ways of sustainable building will be presented at hands-on
workshops while erecting a cutting-edge building: the first made of
Hybrid Adobe and papercrete on the west coast.  This 1200-square foot
community structure will be an agricultural building/retreat center for
various activist organizations including indymedia.org.  Offered in
co-ordination with Humboldt State University's Campus Center for
Appropriate Technology (CCAT), the experience gained from the project
will later be used in the construction of a demonstration technology
hostel in Arcata, CA.

These fun workshops get your hands in the mud, actually building while
learning, and creating community.  Becoming part of the team, you'll
learn the different stages and aspects to hybrid adobe and papercrete
construction.  We'll combine various building styles including hybrid
adobe block walls, bamboo-reinforced wall panels, hybrid post and beam
design, poured walls, cob style and more.

Hybrid Adobe creates low-cost, easy to build, flame-proof,
energy-efficient buildings from local earth, used paper and a binder.
By actually helping to construct this building, you will be empowered
to build your own low-cost home, to insulate and remodel existing
structures, or use this strong, non-toxic material for dozens of other
applications.   Possibilities include: house additions, landscaping,
garden/privacy walls, sculpture, furniture, soundproofing, domes, and
sheds.  Made from local materials, these simple procedures allow you to
do the work yourself, saving energy and reusing the fibers from waste
paper.

When dry, hybrid adobe is lightweight and easy to cut with a saw,
making it highly creative and easier to work with than classic adobe,
standard framing or strawbale.  The seminar portion also explains how
to insulate and flame-proof buildings, how to set up a  simple
pulper/blender, building permit information and more.   The optional
third day of the workshop (taught by architectural designer Joyce
Plath) offers an introduction to site and building design with an
emphasis on the special possibilities of hybrid adobe and papercrete.

Come for 1, 2 or 3 days of the workshop and camp free by the stream.
Enjoy evening campfires and music on 40 acres of lovely mountain land.
Camping and organic vegetarian food is included in price.  If you have
the time, come early or stay on for additional days to learn more on a
volunteer or work exchange basis, starting July 14 and continuing all
summer long.  Just choose the dates that are best for you to come and
we'll help arrange transport to the site.
